Agriculture Strategy 2015-2019

The Solomon Islands Agriculture and Livestock Sector Policy 2015–2019 was designed as a medium-term roadmap to strengthen the country’s most important economic sector. Agriculture sustains about 85% of the rural population and contributes significantly to food security, employment, and exports. The policy sets out goals to achieve food sovereignty, improve rural livelihoods, promote import substitution, and expand agricultural trade. It emphasizes a twin-track approach: improving staple food and climate-resilient crops, while diversifying and expanding export commodities such as cocoa, copra, palm oil, spices, coffee, and kava.

Priority actions include revitalizing extension services, strengthening research and biosecurity, improving market access, supporting commercial farming and cooperatives, and ensuring sustainable land use. The strategy is aligned with the National Development Strategy and the Democratic Coalition for Change Government’s policy framework, and it provides clear outcomes around poverty reduction, food security, sustainability, and reduced import dependency.
