The Tuna Management and Development Plan (TMDP), prepared under the Fisheries Act, sets out the government’s roadmap to ensure Solomon Islands secures maximum economic and social benefits from its tuna resources. Covering purse seine, longline, pole-and-line, and other fishing methods across the EEZ and archipelagic waters, the plan aligns with the National Development Strategy and emphasizes sustainable stock management, ecosystem-based practices, and strong governance.
It introduces licensing rules, Vessel Day Scheme allocations, and measures to support onshore processing and investment. Key strategies include maintaining stock sustainability, boosting local employment, expanding processing capacity, enhancing food security, and ensuring Solomon Islands’ effective role in regional tuna management bodies such as the PNA, WCPFC, and FFA.
